In this module students will build upon the knowledge and understanding gained during the first year of studies of organic chemistry. Students will learn about the physical and chemical properties of several new functional groups to extend their toolkit of organic reactions, so important for organic synthesis.
Students will learn about the structure of benzene and study its important rections in the production of new materials. Students will also learn about the important condensation polymers, polyamides, and polyesters and their uses in synthetic fibres and many modern plastics.

Students will learn how to apply mathematical skills to a quantitative study of equilibrium, rates, and energy, and to predict the extent, speed, and feasibility of a chemical reaction. Students knowledge of inorganic chemistry will be expanded by a detailed study of the transition elements.

Students will also learn how an understanding of reaction rates allows them to predict the very steps that make up reaction mechanisms.

Transition elements look at the chemical and physical properties of the central region of the periodic table. Students will learn about the colours, shapes, and reactions of transition metal ions and learn about the different types of isomerism shown by transition metal complexes.
