Year 11 — PSHCE

Term 1: Adulthood and Choices

This unit explores a variety of adult choices students may be faced with throughout life, including organ, blood and stem cell donation, teenage pregnancy choices, miscarriage, abortion laws, testicular and prostate cancer, cervical, breast and ovarian cancer, parenthood, love and abuse, and vaccinations and immunisations.

Miscarriage

The spontaneous or unplanned expulsion of a foetus from the womb before it is able to survive independently.

Infertility

The inability to conceive children.

Abortion

The termination of a pregnancy.

Consent

Permission for something to happen or agreement to do something.

Parenthood

The state of being a parent and the responsibilities involved.

Vaccination

Treatment with a vaccine to produce immunity against a disease.

Immunisation

The action of making a person or animal immune to infection, typically by inoculation.

Term 2: Staying Safe

In this unit students will build on their knowledge and understanding from our spiral curriculum and develop their knowledge of virtual reality and live streaming, drugs - new psychoactive substances, festivals - drugs and nitrous oxide, war on drugs, cosmetic surgery, drug substance addiction, online reputation and digital footprints.

Consent

Permission for something to happen or agreement to do something.

Current Affairs

Events of political or social interest and importance happening in the world at the present time.

Drugs

A medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body.

Cosmetic surgery

Cosmetic surgery is where a person chooses to have an operation, or invasive medical procedure, to change their physical appearance for cosmetic rather than medical reasons.

Virtual Reality

the computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional image or environment that can be interacted with in a seemingly real or physical way by a person using special electronic equipment, such as a helmet with a screen inside.

Digital Footprint

The information about a particular person that exists on the internet as a result of their online activity.

This unit enables students to be more socially and politically aware and will enable them to be more aware of their consumption of media.

Students to understand UK and world rights and how they can be used to protect citizens.

Term 3: Sexual Health

In this unit students will build on their previous learning from RSE and explore key issues such as peer on peer bullying, fertility and what impacts it, the menopause, alcohol and choices, the importance of sexual health, contraception, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), respect and relationships.

HIV

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a chronic, potentially life-threatening condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Consent

Permission for something to happen or agreement to do something.

Contraception

The deliberate use of artificial methods or other techniques to prevent pregnancy as a consequence of sexual intercourse.

Menopause

Menopause is when a female's periods stop due to lower hormone levels, usually between 45 and 55 years old.

This unit will equip students with the knowledge to make safe and healthy decisions throughout their adult lives.

Students will be able to identify positive choices surrounding sexual health, as well as understanding how negative and/or negligent choices can affect others in their community.

Term 4: Handling Exams

In this unit students learn about protecting mental, emotional and physical health during public examination periods.

Revision

Study of work you have done, in order to prepare for an exam.

Revision Timetable

Essentially a calendar, but instead of holidays and birthdays, it contains topics and subjects you need to revise on specific days.

Prioritise

To be able to determine the order for dealing with (a series of items or tasks) according to their relative importance.

Exam

A formal test of a person's knowledge or proficiency in a subject or skill.

Well-being

The state of being comfortable, healthy, or happy.

Term 5: Practical Revision

In this unit, students will receive practical tips and tricks from all core subjects, with relevance to their upcoming GCSEs. These lessons will provide help with subject-specific ways to revise, highlighting best practice and topics which will be included in their upcoming exam.

Stress

A state of mental or emotional strain resulting from difficult or demanding circumstances.

Relaxation

A state of being free from tension and anxiety.

Time management

The idea of having control over how we best use our time, making decisions in advance to use our time most effectively.

Active revision

Creating revision materials, testing ourselves, making mind maps, doing practice papers - actively learning and relearning.

Passive revision

Watching documentaries, reading without testing, listening to someone speak about a subject.

Self-discipline

Having the ability and determination to stick to the goals we set ourselves, even in the face of temptation not to.

Meditation

Focusing on your mind for a period of time, in silence or with the aid of chanting, for religious or spiritual purposes or as a method of relaxation.
